Abstract: Shakespeare’s Macbeth translated in Canadian French by the poet Michel Garneau in 1978 offers several insights to the main issues regarding theatre translation, both on the linguistic and translational level. This analysis focuses on the implications of the concept of orality in a translation approach that often borders on various forms of adaptation. In particular, it examines the specificity of an operation that belongs to a phase of Canadian history where theatre became a laboratory for identity research, and that finds a critical legitimation through the author/translator’s metadiscourse on the status of transposition.
